It was the maiden voyage of my own ship, the Black Whirl, that took me to the cursed port of Batavia. The last years had brought luck and loot in the Caribbean, not for the least part because of the stockpile of Malay Kratom I had taken from Penang then. But now I was down to the bottom of the barrels scratching the last rotting leaves out there, and with those leaves I feared my luck might go.
On one of the Spanish galeones I had taken I caught a merchant and spared his life for a story about a leaf of hundred pleasures. It gave you the strength of a whale, the willpower of an angel and the happiness of a king, he told me, and it came from the kingdom of Bali, far to the east from Batavia. But Bali was hostile, and Batavia the trading post for these leaves.
I traded five chests of Bali Kratom in Batavia and paid for the weight in Spanish Gold from the mines of Peru. It turned out that the merchant in Batavia who supplied the Bali Kratom was a cousin of the scoundrel in whose den I had ended in Penang. It was time for pay back!
Just as the deal was finished, I took a mouthful of the fresh and powerful Bali Kratom. The effects set in almost immediately, and potent they were indeed!
Before the merchant could utter a sound I had sent him to hell. With nothing but my bare hands I took the chests with the Bali kratom, my gold and the life of the merchant’s guards and made my way back to the Black Whirl: and really, that day I was strong like a whale, had the willpower of an angel and the happiness of a king - but in fact I had nothing but the Bali Kratom.
